Winter for the competitive soccer player often means indoor soccer or futsal or maybe a winter speed and agility program or even a winter strength program. For most, the common question is, “What’s best for player development?”
Indoor Soccer vs. Futsal — BNT coaching staff recommends FUTSAL
Futsal is better for player development. While both have their benefits, Futsal is renowned for its part in developing the best soccer players in the world because Futsal is a game that promotes ball control, creativity, and speed of play. Because the ball is heavier, it stays on the court more and encourages touches with all parts of the player’s foot. With no wall around the court edge, players must move and support each other. Futsal is played in a smaller space and because the ball moves very quickly on the hard surface, speed of play is FAST! This requires the player’s mental speed and foot speed to improve making an impact when players return to the outdoor soccer field. Futsal was called Brazil’s best-kept secret. Most junior players in Brazil don’t play outdoor soccer until around age 13, instead, they play futsal!
Quotes from some of the top players in the world today on how futsal helped them as young players:
Lionel Messi – “As a little boy in Argentina, I played futsal on the streets and for my club. It was tremendous fun, and it really helped me become who I am today,”
Cristiano Ronaldo – “During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal,” he said. “The small playing area helped me improve my close control, and whenever I played futsal I felt free. If it wasn’t for futsal, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.”
